Making a Chicken tractor in your backyard is quite easy than what people generally think. However you need to keep a few things in perspective and undertake some basic planning before you make one. The first thing that you must decide is how big should be.The minimum area recommended for chicken in a coop is 4 square feet per bird, so if you have 4 birds, your Chicken tractor should at least be 16 square feet.Of course if you can provide more space will only mean happier chicken!
Constructing a Chicken tractor is pretty easy; all that you require is some chicken wire and lumber and you are all set! Most Tractors are constructed in an ‘A’ shape which is why they are also called an Ark. The reason why such a construct is called a tractor is because it is designed to restrict the movement of the chicken to just one place so that they may provide the necessary “benefits” which include:
a. Ridding the grass of weed.
b. Ridding the field of pests.
c. Providing the soil with nitrogen rich manure.
Clearly these will be valued by any Backyard gardener or Poultry Farmer! To aid this, a Chicken tractor is specially equipped. A chicken tractor is a construct which is without any floor so that the chicken can reach the grass easily. They are also very light which means that they can be moved around from place to place just by one man.
There are a few things you should be aware of all time when keeping chicken in a tractor. Firstly do not keep the tractor in one place for too long. After the chicken are done with weed and bugs they will move on to scratching the top soil for taking dust bath as that is a common chicken habit. After you see that your birds have done the needful, move them on to another place which requires them. Also you need to be careful about predators, as they are very skilled at getting their prey. Most of the common predators you will have to deal with are dogs, cats, weasels, foxes, raccoons, possums, owls, and hawks. They all have different ways of catching a Chicken so be very careful about leaving your birds out all alone and ill defended.
