Tractors are used today commonly for agricultural purposes. Tractors are large powered vehicles that drive and slow speeds but produce a lot of power. There are various agricultural implements that can be towed behind the tractor to do various jobs on the farm.
The first tractors came about around 1850. The earliest tractors were made of steam engines that drove a mechanical belt. These steam-powered agricultural engines were used until the early 1900’s when more reliable tractors were developed.
The first gasoline powered tractor was built in 1892. Only two were sold, and this did not occur until 1911. Henry Ford was the first to mass produce tractors when he introduced the Fordson in 1917. The Fordson was a gasoline-powered internal combustion engine tractor. Ford Tractors began the widespread popularity of tractors.
A conventional tractor consists of a driver’s seat between two large wheels. The engine is located in front of the driver. There are two small steerable tires below the engine compartment. This design has remained the same for almost the whole existence of the tractor. The only exceptions are the modern tractors with an enclosed cab for driver comfort and safety. Most closed in cabs come with air conditioning and heating. This makes it easier to farm in comfort. Closed in cabs also brought the idea of computers in tractors, since they can be protected.
Farm Machinery has made many new advances over the past century. There are now many different brands of mass produced tractors, the most popular over the past century being John Deere, Massey-Ferguson, New Holland, and Case IH Tractors. Most people chose brand based on what their family has had in the past. These brands created competition, and therefore lowered the price of tractors.
Farm tractors are mostly used for plowing, tilling, disking, harrowing, planting, or other similar tasks. Different farm implements are attached to the rear of the tractor. With new technology, farming has become very precise. Most new tractors have the ability to come equipped with a GPS and on board computers that show the farmer exactly where he/she is. This also leads to auto steer options. These make sure the tractor does not overlap with the previous row and waste fuel. The tractor does have to be steered at the end of the row.
Within a modern tractor, there are 5 pedals. There is the clutch, to disengage the transmission. There is a left rear wheel brake and a right rear wheel brake. These help the driver control the tractor during turns. There is a differential lock pedal. This assures that the same amount of power is given to both back wheels, thus preventing slipping. But, the differential lock has to be taken off during turns so that the wheels can operate separately. The last pedal is the throttle. The throttle works much like that of a car throttle. In tractors, there is also a hand operated throttle that ensures that the tractor goes the same speed up and down the different rows.

A power take-off (PTO) is a splined driveshaft, usually on a tractor or truck, that can be used to provide power to an attachment or separate machine. It is designed to be easily connected and disconnected. The power take-off allows implements to draw energy from the tractor’s engine.
Semi-permanently mounted power take-offs can also be found on industrial and marine engines. These applications typically use a Cardan shaft and bolted joint to transmit power to a secondary implement or accessory. In the case of a marine application, such shafts may be used to power fire pumps.
Safety

The PTO and its associated shafts and universal joints are a common cause of incidents and injury in farming and industry. According to the National Safety Council, 6 percent of tractor related fatalities in 1997 in the USA involved the PTO. When a piece of clothing, which can be as small as a single thread, touches a spinning part it can be pulled around the part. The clothing and the person wearing it are pulled into the shaft often resulting in loss of limb or death. Some implements do use plastic guards to try to keep a person from becoming entangled in a PTO shaft, but even with guards people need to exercise caution around PTO shafts when they are plugged into a tractor or truck . In some countries it is illegal to operate a PTO without the shaft guard correctly fastened.
Technical Standardization
A tractor PTO
Agricultural PTOs are standardized in dimensions and speed. The ISO standard for PTOs is ISO 500, which as of the 2004 edition was split into three parts ISO 500-1 (General specifications, safety requirements, dimensions for master shield and clearance zone), ISO 500-2 (Narrow-track tractors, dimensions for master shield and clearance zone), and ISO 500-3 (Main PTO dimensions and spline dimensions, location of PTO). The original type calls for operation at 540 revolutions per minute (RPM). A shaft that rotates at 540 rpm has 6 splines on it, and a diameter of 1?”. Two newer types, supporting higher power applications, operate at 1000 RPM and differ in shaft size. The larger shaft has 20 splines (1?” diameter), while the smaller has 21 (1?” diameter). All three types rotate counterclockwise when viewed from the tractor. A 10 spline type was used with some early equipment such as the 1948 Land Rover, a six spline adapter was usually supplied. It is customary for agricultural machines manufacturers to provide the nominal PTO power specification, an indication of the available instantaneous power at the shaft.
Commercial Vehicle PTOs
Truck transmissions have one or more locations which allow for a PTO to be mounted. The PTO must be purchased separately and care is required to match the physical interface of the transmission with a compatible PTO. PTO suppliers will usually require details of the make, model and even serial number of the transmission. Care is also needed to ensure that the physical space around the transmission allows for installation of the PTO. The PTO is engaged/disengaged using the main transmission clutch and a remote control mechanism which operates on the PTO itself. Typically an air valve is used to engage the PTO, but a mechanical linkage, electric or hydraulic mechanism are also options.
Units will be rated according to the continuous and intermittent torque that can be applied through them and different models will offer different “PTO shaft rotation to engine RPM” ratios.
In the majority of cases the PTO will connect directly to a hydraulic pump. This allows for transmission of mechanical force through the hydraulic fluid system to any location around the vehicle where a hydraulic motor will convert it back into rotary or linear mechanical force. Typical applications include:
Running a water pump on a fire engine or water truck
Powering a blower system used to move dry materials such as cement
Raising and lowering a dump truck bed
Operating the mechanical arm on a bucket truck used by electrical maintenance personnel or Cable TV maintenance crews
Operating a winch on a tow truck
Operating the compactor on a garbage truck
Operating a Hiab/Grapple truck
It is also possible but less common to connect something other than a hydraulic pump directly to the PTO.

The Latest Franchise Opportunities
With hundreds of new franchise concepts being started every year, it is nearly impossible to keep track of the freshest ideas. Here is an update of two new franchises and how they have fared in their first several months of franchising.
The Counter – No, this isn’t just another fast food hamburger joint. Besides serving hamburgers, The Counter has as much in common with your local McDonalds or Wendy’s as the World Cup has to do with your child’s weekend soccer game. First opened in Santa Monica in 2003, this trendy update to the classic burger joint serves its burgers with any combination of 10 cheeses, 26 toppings, and 17 sauces. So, go ahead and order that Danish Bleu Cheese Burger topped with dried cranberries and a ginger soy glaze you always wanted.
Since 2003, The Counter has received the type of press that most companies can only dream about. After being listed as one of the top 20 burgers in the country by GQ, the holy grail of endorsers, The Oprah Winfrey Show, named it the “Best Burger in the USA.” (An aside on the power of the O-nod, sales jumped from $44,000/mo to $245,000/mo after the endorsement)
With all of this success, The Counter did the only logical next step and began selling franchises in early 2006 with a $40,000 franchise fee and 6% royalty.
So how is it going? The company has already inked agreements for 60 restaurants in California alone. Next up is expansion into Florida, New York, Arizona and Nevada followed by the rest of the country. With long range projections of only 400 to 600 units, The Counter is well on its way to franchising stardom.
EQUIPRO – If Santa Monica and The Counter just seem too trendy and hip, this light equipment repair franchise from Wisconsin surely won’t. EQUIPRO, a subsidiary of Wacker Corporation began providing repair service to the light construction equipment industry in 2003. At the same time that the light equipment market is growing at nearly ten percent per year, many large equipment dealers have been cutting back on service support. In response to these trends, EQUIPRO began to build out its network of service centers.
EQUIPRO focuses on providing service for the following manufacturers: ICS, MI-T-M, MK Diamond, Sullair, and Wacker. The franchises are also full-service dealers for Honda, Briggs & Stratton, Robin/Subaru, Wacker and Kohler engines.
For each franchise, the company hires a Metro Service Specialist (MSS). The MSS is an employee of EQUIPRO, Inc. hired on behalf of the franchisee to develop service sales and act as a liaison for EQUIPRO’s OEM partners in the local market. The responsibilities of the MSS include effectively calling on contractor offices and jobsites, equipment and rental dealers, as well as national accounts to promote solutions for equipment repair and parts. In addition, EQUIPRO provides professional training on business operations and technical details both in the classroom and on-site.
Franchising since June 2005, new franchisees can expect to invest between $145,000 and $350,000. EQUIPRO has opened 12 service centers and plans on opening 33 units by the end of 2006 and 150 in the next seven years.

Riding Lawn Mowers Basics
Riding lawn mowers become a necessity for many homeowners for a variety of reasons. For example, maybe you have moved and your lawn is just too big for a push lawn mower or health reasons have made a riding lawn mower an absolute must have. Whatever reasons you have for needing a new riding lawn mower, you should be aware of few things you need to know when it is time to buy.
First, you should have a good idea of your yard size. This will help you determine the engine size and cutting width you need in your riding lawn mower. As a general rule of thumb, if you have a lawn that is a half to one acre in size, you should get an engine with a minimum of 14 ½ horsepower and with a cutting width maximum of 42 inches. If you have a lawn the size of one to two acres, you will generally need a cutting width of 42 to 46 inches and your engine will need to be between 14 and 16 horsepower. A lawn of more than three acres and you will need what is called a garden tractor. This will need a cutting width of 46 to 54 inches and the engine will have to be 18 to 24 horsepower.
Your next decision will be whether you should buy a riding lawn mower or a garden tractor. Both do the same basic function of mowing your lawn. However, the garden tractor can be used to pull a variety of yard attachments. For example, you could pull a tiller, disc harrow, a plow. You can even use a snow plow or snow blower with it. The garden tractor is perfect for those big mowing jobs as well.
Once you have taken care of the bigger decisions, the easier ones are next to come. You need to choose whether you want an automatic riding lawn mower or a gear driven one. Your choice should be based on the amount of obstacles you have in your lawn. A gear driven lawn mower would be good for lawns with little obstacles, while an automatic is perfect for those with many.
You can then choose mulching, bagging, cylinder types and any attachments you want with your riding lawn mower.
It is also important that you follow safety precautions when using any riding lawn mower. Make sure all potentially hazardous debris and other items are clear out of the yard. This includes pine cones, rocks, and other debris. Also, avoid allowing children to ride on or operate the riding lawn mower. Children can easily fall off the lawn mower often resulting in injurious or fatal accidents occurring. You should also avoid running the lawn mower next to anyone and make sure children are not playing in the area you are mowing.
By choosing the right riding lawn mower and following the proper safety precautions, you will be able to enjoy your riding lawn mower for years to come.
