When we are talking about automotive electrical system, how can we miss on the spark plugs. Spark Plugs, as the Wikipedia defines, are electrical device that fits into the cylinder head of some internal combustion engines and ignites compressed aerosol gasoline by means of an electric spark.

Often, a little problem with the spark plug is the reason behind the breakdown of the vehicle in the middle of road. A little maintenance and few D-I-Y tips will help you keep these auto parts in place. But before that for repair, you need to know the common problems behind spark plugs. Problems With Your Spark Plug

• There are times, when your car’s engine cranks, isn’t it? But then, nothing happen after, i.e. It doesn’t start after that. This is possible because of the spark plug.
• In some cases, the engine might run. After that, it often misfires. Check for any worn out spark plug. In such a case, it is possible that these auto parts have either fouled or probably the reason is bad spark plug wires
• High or Low Voltage also indicate problem. On an oscilloscope, if you observe the firing pattern of each cylinder, you might be able to diagnose the problems yourself. If the firing voltage is noticed to be normal, it means there is excessive resistance in a plug wire. Other possibilities can be loose plug wire, badly worn or too wide spark plug.
• In case you notice that there is a lower voltage in firing pattern, then it indicates, a damaged or shortened plug wire.
• Fouling is something that should be avoided. One important cause of it is deposits of oil or fuel upon the plug electrodes.

Reasons Why You Need To Change the Spark Plugs

There are a number of factors that can be the cause for replacement of spark plugs. Some of them are:

• Fouling – Incase you notice that there is a single fouled spark plug, you need to be cautious and get it replaced soon. Otherwise, you might have to suffer the loss of 25% of output of four cylinder engines.
• For Preventive Maintenance – This is always suggested as to avoid any major auto repair.
• Due to Worn Out Electrodes – That increases the distance between the electrodes and finally increases the firing voltage.

Impressive

LSU: First off, as I stated in another thread, big emotional win
for LSU. Was supposed to be a home game for the Tigers, but they
had to travel to Tempe, a very tough place to win. They didn’t
quit when a lot of team would’ve, and got the victory.

Notre Dame: Charlie Weis has had the best two weeks of any new
coach in college football, and it’s not far fetched to believe
they have a legit shot at beating USC in a couple weeks. They
should be able to put up some points in that one at home, it’s
just a question of if the D can force some turnovers and if the
offense helps keep Leinart, Bush and Co. off the field

Texas: Gotta hand it to much-maligned Mac Brown and his troops.
They go into a very hostile environment and get a come from
behind victory. Vince Young is for real, for those who don’t
already know. They have solidified themselves as top challenger
to USC.

Clemson: Whitehurst and Merriweather lead them to a win over
Maryland, in what was a classic let down/sandwich game after the
big win over Texas A & M, and with Miami coming up next week.

Disappointments

btw, I’m gonna give Michigan a pass, as they got beat by a team
that I see as being “at their level”. Not a huge upset, in my
opinion.

Oklahoma: They pulled away from a mediocore Tulsa team in the
4th quarter, but Stoops realizes this QB situation is
troublesome. So bad infact, that they didn’t throw the ball at
all in the second half. It may not be a bad time to bring the
Barry Switzer option back to Norman.

Pittsburgh: Wannstedt and Cavanaugh have officially wrecked that
program and Tyler Palko in the process. No matter how badly they
were spanked by Notre Dame the previous week, no excuse for
losing this one versus an inferior opponent. Happy to see Frank
Solich get a big victory for the Ohio U program, though.

TCU: This is a young team off a HUGE upset, so I can’t be too
upset with them. But, definately a disappointment losing to SMU.
Maybe TCU really isn’t very good, judging by OU’s woes.
Patterson is an excellent coach, and they’ll rebound

The engines listed above are the most popular and some of them are custom built for lawn mower racing. But don’t limit yourself to this list, as I’ve mentioned Tecumseh engines work well too. Even Hondas are good. It’s just a matter of jiving with your engine and making it fit for your lawn mower racing.

There are racers who can make old and tattered engines look and feel like new again.

Racing lawn mower engines are no different than your car’s engine. So the modification process is almost the same, you replace parts, port and polish the intake, bore the block, etc… Just make sure that the modifications are acceptable in the division that you are competing in.

Different divisions have different rules when it comes to modifications.  Sanctioning bodies are strict with this so you have to make sure that you are abiding by the rules.

Consider improving these areas so you can get the most out of your racing lawn mower engines. Again, be aware of your limitations before tinkering with your engine.

It is no different than what you would do to get your car ready for the race track. Proper modification, tuning, and testing will win you that coveted checkered flag. Not to mention a year worth of bragging rights as the top dog in lawn mower racing.

The best time to work on your racing lawn mower engines is during the winter. This way you will have ample time to perform all the modifications on your engine and make it ready for the next lawn mower racing season.

If you’ve ever smoked a cigarette you know how nasty the filter gets. Even after just a few puffs, the recently white tip will turn a disgusting orange-brown. The Southern California Wildfires have burned up hundreds, make that thousands, of acres filling the air with ash, smoke and dust.

During the fires, you could actually see the particles floating through the air. As the fires died down, you could still see their presence on your car. I would walk out of my house in the morning to find a thin layer of debris coving my car every morning. It was disgusting; and not only because my car was dirty, but because we were breathing that air.

The news advised the residents of San Diego, who weren’t evacuated, to close their windows, shut off their air conditioning and stay indoors. Basically, people should avoid the poor air quality as much as possible.

After a week or so, the presence of tiny ash particles started to disappear and people slowly started to spend more time outdoors. But the air quality was still really bad. Even though the dirty air wasn’t visible, we are still breathing. Not only is this bad for your lungs, but this air can really take a toll on your car’s air filter. People can deal with having bad health, but when car starts problems start to cost money, they aren’t happy. Thankfully, a few car companies have been very understanding and have provided customers with free services during these tough times.

For example, Goodwrench is currently running a promotion for the month of November where they will replace all air filters for GM cars. Their website states,

“Due to the recent wildfires, ash and other particles in the air could impact your vehicle’s engine air filter. To help, starting November 1, 2007 – November 30, 2007 GM Goodwrench will offer to residents of the eight affected southern California counties an engine air filter replacement free of charge on your GM car or truck.*

The offer is available at participating dealers only and to residents of the following counties: Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, San Bernardino, Santa Barbara, Ventura, Riverside and Imperial.â€

Volkswagen has also been very helpful. “We at Volkswagen are sending our thoughts and prayers to those affected by the recent devastating southern California wildfires,†said Steve Mears. “For customers who were severely impacted with damage to or loss of their residence and/or business, Volkswagen will defer their lease payments and extend their loan payments for up to 90 days. Customers will not accrue any additional charge or loan interest for the designated period.â€

In addition, they offer free air filters for any Volkswagen car in the San Diego area, all models 1998 and newer.

I know what you’re probably thinking – free air filter – Big Whoop. But hey, it’s better than nothing. What does a dirty air filter mean for you? Decreased gas mileage, worse performance and can lead to early engine failure. So sure, you may not get a free car, but a new air filter can greatly benefit your car. Act quickly because the offer is only until the end of November!

In this state you can find salvage yards wherever you look. A salvage yard is where you can buy used parts and sometimes the vehicle itself for a discounted price. Parts can become very expensive and the best way to solve this and keep within you budget is to buy them used and from a salvage yard. They get automobiles from individuals who sell their vehicles and also from insurance companies that sell vehicles that were in accidents to make back some of the insurance money that they have to pay out.

Once the salvage yard receive the car they then code it in their system and stack them on top each other. The cars are then taken to a room where they are inspected to see which parts they are able to use again. They start with the cosmetic parts like the mirrors and doors and then move unto the others like the engine and transmission. Once this is done the reusable parts are then taken to a showroom that allows the customers the space to view the parts and decide which they want. Here is also set up in a order so that you are directed to exactly what you want and you don’t have to dig through many different parts so that you can find what you need. They rest of the vehicle is then taken somewhere else to be used for scrap metal. If that company doesn’t do this then it would have been sold to a factory that does this. All the inventory that they have will be stored in a database for easy access and also when you call to ask if they have a part then they can check on their system and tell you without actually having to go out and look. These databases are also viewable by other salvage yards.
