The air filter in your car may not be something that you pay a massive amount of attention to, but it can quickly become so if you let it become blocked. A blocked air filter will greatly reduce the power that you get from your vehicle – good luck getting up a steep hill with what amounts to a vacuum cleaner with seats – and further to that it has the same effect on fuel efficiency that a volcano has on a remote island paradise. You could be paying out roughly the same per week in extra fuel costs that you would have to spend on just replacing the filter – something that only needs to be done once or twice a year at most. So let us think – an extra $20 twice a year, or the same amount 52 times?
You know it makes sense – and it takes very little time, Ten minutes if you are prepared to get your head down and your hands dirty. So now you have no excuse not to do it, OK? So let us get over to the car and pop that hood. You are looking for a black plastic case with metal bits on either side of it. It has a black tube going into it. There you go! Now, flip those clips open. Lift off the top of the filter casing, and if there are any small parts that you remove in doing so, keep them safe! The process will take longer than 10 minutes if you have to spend five of them asking “Did anyone see where I put those nuts?” Much longer, if you are immature enough to laugh everytime someone says “nuts”.
Now, the old filter will just be sitting there, ready to be taken out. Take a few moments to look at it. Not because you are going to miss it, or anything, but because you want to get a good look at how the one you are fitting needs to sit. Incorrectly placed, a new filter will be more effective than no filter at all. Now lift that filter out carefully, ensuring that none of the larger bits of debris fall into the workings. Have a look at those larger bits of debris. That is what has been causing you to have to pull in every time you see a gas station.
Now, put the new filter in and make sure as mentioned above that it is sitting correctly in the casing. Push it down properly – not hard enough to break anything, but so that it pops in snugly and you can get the cover back on properly. And next comes the tricky bit. Waving goodbye to fuel wastage. It will be a difficult experience for you, of course, because you have been attached to having to remortgage your house every time you want to fill the tank. No, seriously, you are done. How easy was that? Real easy, plus you saved money, plus you did it all yourself. Well done!

The skateboard deck is the most important part of the whole skateboard. It is the part to which all other parts are attached and allows all the parts to work together. The deck is what you stand on and what determines how well you can maneuver and operate the skateboard. If you’re looking for Flat Roofing System information, you’ve come to the right place. Here are some points on the five essential components.
The Slope
Positive drainage is the first and mainly important factor to consider with any low-slope Flat Roofing System. You don’t need much slope, just ¼”:10 is sufficient. That’s enough to keep water from accumulating on the roof, which can cause leaks and premature roof failure on Flat Roofing System. If the slope isn’t in the structure, install a tapered system between the roof deck and roofing.
The Base Sheet
The low-slope Flat Roofing System should be is the three-ply, self-adhering type. It gives you a professional grade roof without the hazard of torches and hot asphalt. It should be mechanically attached base sheet, so the roofing can be removed when the time comes. Be sure to follow the required nailing pattern, as the fasteners will be the only craze holding the roof down. If there is an adjacent sloped roof, take away enough shingles so you can run the base sheet about 16″ up the slope of Flat Roofing System.
The Smooth-surfaced Mid-ply
Be sure to use a mid-ply, so your Flat Roofing System doesn’t undergo from the inherent weakness of single-ply roofing systems. It gives you a protective back-up layer in case water penetrates a seam on cap sheet of Flat Roofing System. Start with a half-wide course, so the seams will end up staggered when you put on the cap sheet. That will prevent a big “hump” at the side laps, obstructing the smooth flow of water off roof. If there is an adjacent sloped roof, of Flat Roofing System, run the mid-ply about “13″ up the slope so it doesn’t terminate at the exact same place at the base of sheet.
The Drip Edge
After you have the mid-ply rolled down nice and tight, it’s time to put in the drip edge on Flat Roofing System. Lap the metal at least 3″ and seal under the lap with asphalt roofing cement of Flat Roofing System. After the metal is tacked on, go down to the ground to take a look. The drip edge is about all you see of the flat roof from the ground, so you want it looking high-quality. Then nail the metal off with standard roofing nails spaced no more than 6″ apart. After the drip edge is nailed down, coat it with asphalt primer using a paint brush or very small roller. Be careful it doesn’t drip down the face of the drip edge of Flat Roofing System.
The Granular-surfaced Cap Sheet
when installing the cap sheet, start with a full width course and let it overhang the drip edge by about ¼”on Flat Roofing System. After it’s on, you can trim it off nice and flush with a straight blade in your value knife. Be sure to use MB (modified bitumen) cement on the end laps, as regular flashing cement is not like-minded. Terminate the cap sheet 12″ up any adjacent slope of roof. By staggering the three plies in this manner it avoids a hump under your shingles that could hold water and leak on Flat Roofing System.

Design is a very subjective task. However, there are a number of objective factors that must be considered in creating an aesthetically pleasing and functional deck design:
1. exposure concerns such as weather, sun and wind
2. functional considerations such as connection to the home and traffic patterns
The influence of local weather conditions needs to be considered when locating and designing a deck. A deck is a transition area between the environment maintained inside the home and the external world. The important thing is to consider how the external elements will affect the use and the enjoyment of the deck. One of the most critical considerations is the position of the deck in relation to the daily path of the sun. A deck that is too warm or too cold will likely receive less use.
In warmer climates where decks are used all year long the primary goal can be to provide shade by location. This means positioning the deck on the eastern side of the house to take advantage of shade in the late afternoon or early evening. In hotter climates the north face of a house would be the coolest at midday. Since decks may experience completely different temperatures during the course of the day how and when heating and cooling will be optimized must be taken into account.
With a deck that has a southern exposure awnings or trellises can be utilized to block the overhead sun but tend to be less effective when the sun is lower in the sky during the morning and evening. While this may not be a problem in the winter it can result in considerable summer overheating.
Sometimes a deck can be designed to make the best of both sun and shade. A wraparound deck that wraps around the corner of a house will generally have one of the 2 areas in shade. Movable screens can be used to effectively screen a small area.
A pergola, arbor, overhead trellis or an awning can each provide shade for larger areas. Trellises can be designed to provide maximum shade at certain times of the day and allow some sun through during other times of the day.
Frequent changes in the strength and direction of wind can be a tough element to design for. Well anchored screens and large plantings are effective at being wind shields. Another design idea that works is locating the deck on the side of the home that is opposite any prevailing winds.
Changes in deck level and the use of railing systems with no openings are features that can create protected areas on lower deck levels and block the wind with an adjacent upper level deck and railing. Large amounts of rain during the warm months when deck use is more frequent might necessitate the addition of an overhead structure.
How the deck relates to the inside of the house is also an important design element. A deck should be an extension of the home – a transition area between the natural outside setting and the more protected indoor area. Any deck with obvious and simple access will encourage family and guests to step outside to chat, admire the view, relax, etc.
Most decks serve multiple purposes so doors accessing the kitchen, livingroom, family room or bedroom are ideal. Glass patio doors, French doors and screen doors blur the boundaries between the inside and the outside. When the weather cooperates these access points extend the living space. Generally it is worth the trouble to add a new door rather than live with a door that is poorly located in relation to the deck.
Besides doorway access, traffic patterns need considerable thought during the deck design process. Stairways should be located so that frequently used areas off the deck are easy to access. On a larger deck this could mean adding more than one stairway.
It is important to analyze existing traffic patterns and important activity areas to ensure that there is sufficient access to garages, driveways, gardens, dog houses and garbage storage areas. A ramp can be a useful deck addition to wheel heavy barbecue grills, garden carts or wheelbarrows or even bicycles onto the deck.
Taking exposure concerns and functional considerations such as traffic patterns and connection to the home into consideration allows a homeowner to utilize these deck design factors in the creation of a deck that is aesthetically pleasing as well as functional.

An outdoor deck has become an increasingly important asset to the homeowner. Therefore in preparing to design their decks homeowners often look for deck photographs in a variety of places.
The internet offers an opportunity for doing deck design research because many companies offer photo galleries that showcase photographs of actual decks built by them. These photos can provide a starting point for homeowners and assist them in developing ideas that can be applied to their own particular backyard environment. Many homeowners modify a deck seen in a photograph because they can see that it has certain commonalities associated with their own home.
The homeowner might see a photograph of a multi-level deck that has a “footprint” that is similar in one or more ways to that of their home. They might see that the shape of the upper or lower deck has positive design possibilities and this inspires them to utilize a similar design in their own deck plan. Rather than a single upper deck they might now see the advantages to having an upper walkout deck level linked to a large lower level by a mid deck platform and two linking sets of stairs. Thus a deck photograph can provide a design vehicle for homeowners to help them achieve their goal of creating a custom backyard environment.
Many magazines and how-to-do-it books are readily available in book stores and libraries that can provide an amazing array of opportunities to explore the design possibilities of various deck photos. Sometimes it’s a good idea to keep a file of design ideas garnered from these deck images. These design concepts can relate in one or more ways to the general shape of the deck, its railing system, the entrance or exit steps or staircases and such deck amenitie as benches, pergolas, fire pits, planter boxes, arbors, privacy screens, sound systems and lighting.
Home, garden and landscaping shows within the community are also an excellent source of potential deck design ideas. Take along your camera and take photographs of interesting and unique deck displays that are an important part of such events. Check out the display kiosks where builders and contractors show off deck photographs of completed deck projects that they have designed and built. Make note of any design possibilities and add these to your deck design folder.
Home and garden television shows are also an excellent source for finding photographs of interesting deck designs. They provide a great deal of practical information regarding topics such as decks. In some cases they focus primarily on the subject of good deck design.
Probably one of the most overlooked sources of deck design ideas is very close to home. Relatives, friends and neighbors have decks that reflect their owners’ personalities in many ways. Take your camera along next time you visit and take photographs of that particular deck that you admire or that deck feature that you wish to incorporate into your deck design. Your relative, friend or neighbor will be immensely flattered because they already love their own deck and its design.
Deck photgraphs ultimately carry more than an image of a structure. Each one displays the distinct personality and decorating style of its owner. The secret is to create a deck design for yourself that will inspire others to repeat the process that you went through in search of the perfect deck design.
And to think it all started with a simple deck photograph.
